History
In keeping with the Carleton Board of Education's policy of naming schools after famous figures in Canadian history, and from a list of names submitted by students who would be attending the school, Colonel By Secondary School was officially named after Lt.-Colonel John By. He was responsible for the building of the Rideau Canal and credited as co-founder of the City of Ottawa. The school crest commemorates Colonel John By, who commanded a detachment of Royal Engineers, who were sent to Canada between 1820 and 1830 to build the Rideau Canal system, tolink the Ottawa River with Kingston. His headquarters were located on and near Parliament Hill. The little village which grew up around this site became known as Bytown. The top section of the crest represents a crossed spade and pick, and a bursting grenade. This was the badge of the Royal Engineers. Beneath this symbol are wavy blue lines, signifying the Ottawa River, near whose shores Colonel By Secondary School is located. In the lower part of the crest is an oak tree. Although this has often been described as the Tree of Knowledge, the truth of the matter is that it is the official seal of the Village of Bytown. The colours white and blue are the official colour of the Royal Engineers; the green is the predominant colour in the family crest of the By family.

The school motto was taken from a Latin textbook and the author was not identified. QUOD INCEPIMUS CONFICIEMUS - What We Have Begun, We Shall Finish.
