On behalf of the Colonel By community, please allow me to welcome you to the International Baccalaureate program. The Colonel By Secondary School community consists of caring students, staff and parents working closely together to foster academic excellence and ensure high student achievement. Our academic program is challenging and is designed to provide our students with a strong curricular and technological foundation for their further studies. At Colonel By, strong academic students who meet the entry requirements have the opportunity to enroll in the International Baccalaureate program. This enables students to earn both an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and the International Baccalaureate Diploma concurrently.
This is the second time that we have used the online format to communicate our information. We hope that this format will allow us to give out more information in a way that is environmentally more responsible.
Within this package you will find several folders. They are as follows:

1- Introduction
a. This introduction letter.
b. The IBO link above contains a diversity of information put out by the International Baccalaureate Organization, most importantly their Mission Statement, The IB Leaner Profile, and general communications put out by the IBO office and the Regional office in New York
2- Information for all applicants
a. The Application Process outlines all procedure for any student to apply to Colonel By’s International Baccalaureate program, and time lines.
b. The Grade 8 Information is the package sent to all OCDSB grade 8 Principals.
3- Application forms for all applicants
a. All Applicants must complete the IB Application form, have an academic teacher complete a Teacher Recommendation form, and include these in their application package
b. The application checklist is an additional guide for applicants.
c. It is important to note to please leave copies, as no item will be returned.
4- Prospectus 2008-2009
a. For Grade 8 students, a ‘Prospectus for Grade 9’ has been provided.
b. For students applying to the grade 10 program and those wishing further details as to the continuum of IB studies may wish to refer to the ‘Prospectus grade 10-12 booklet’.
c. ‘The IB Course Continuum’ has been created as a shorter explanation of the IB courses, in their designated groups, over the 4 year continuum.
5- Additional information
a. The OSSD information identifies the requirements for any Ontario student to graduate. The worksheet assists in your planning.
b. The Potential 4-year plans are simply our attempt to construct a variety of 4-year course plans that would earn a student both their OSSD and IB Diploma. There are countless ways of creating an effective IB program for a given student’s needs and aspirations.
c. ‘What is C.A.S.’ is a portion of the C.A.S. booklet that students entering into IB 1 receive as a guide to their program. Students are not responsible for C.A.S. designated activities in grades 9 or 10.
d. The IB worksheets may assist you in developing a stronger understanding of your 4-year plan.
Several people have asked that the issue of Cross- Boundary Transfer be explained. Students wishing to attend Colonel By Secondary School’s regular academic program (not the IB program) are required to fill up a “Secondary Student Transfer Tracking Form” at any OCDSB High School (available in mid-January). In previous years, these forms have been accepted on a first come first served basis at the school you wish to register your child. The date has traditionally been within the first week of February; however, the new OCDSB Board of Trustees will be responsible for this date. Please refer to www.ocdsb.ca for further information on this issue in the new year.
